I think I'm going to try and hunt down an actual MPC this time and forget these things. I tested it on both Sonar 8.5 and Sequoia 11.1 with my Custom built Rain ION and a PCAudioLabs i7 and it failed miserably with either. I found it really hard to relax and enjoy using it with either DAW.

In Sonar, it slaved sort of okay but it just isn't professional at all. It was impossible to get it to slave with Sequoia however it made a nice transport controller. Here's the fix for this if you have more luck than me with the other issues I had with it and don't mind modding it to help the pad sensors.

Using it side by side with my Nord Lead, the Nord killed it.Īs a drum controller the MPD32 tracks terrible, the pads aren't even close to the original MPC series feel and response and the repeat function is a major let down due to the terrible gap of space between the pad and the trigger. The MPD32 looks nice but it isn't up to my standard by any means. Akai has always made the best drum machine IMHO. Akai MPD218 USB MIDI Drum Pad Controller. Akai MPD 24 Midi Controller, no box or cables, yellowed nobs but good condition. 4.5 out of 5 stars (2) 2 product ratings. I mean, you can program samples and put feel into your tracks like no other I know of. Akai Professional Fire FL Studio Performance USB Controller w/ FL Studio Fruity. If you are at all familiar with MP3's you can fool the most experienced engineers into thinking you recorded a real drummer, and I don't mean with bought loops. Keys are the worst so anything is better for certain. Pads are quicker so that definitely helps but I fear you are very limited beyond that. Pads on a keyboard are only just that from what I understand. So, it will be very familiar right off the bat because I have always used the MP3.

I was almost ready to get the Korg Pad controller but see the new Akai's are modeling around the MP3 more and more. Dedicated drum machines seem to have those extra things that make it easier to accomplish high end programming. I treat them like an instrument so I really want the best, which has always been the MP3's. So, I don't have much else to say really. To me it would be a compromise but I think it comes down to what you are used to, also.įor me though, a drum machine is as important as a guitar or keyboard on its own. Generally the feel is nice to play and doesn't tire your hands so much as say the LPD8 which really needs more of a whack on the pads sometimes to get them to trigger. I find it a bit fiddly during playing to use after-touch to choke cymbals anyway, so I just turned it off and put any chokes I wanted in editing. Either turn it off on each pad or rig it so that the cymbals that you want to choke are on a different MIDI channel to the rest of the kit. This meant that I was often choking hits in an undesired fashion (mostly noticeable on cymbals). One problem I had was that after-touch was on and set to trigger on the the MIDI channel. I was quickly able to set up some custom banks that worked almost instantly with EZDrummer and in cubase.

The configuration software that comes with the unit is OK and does the job. The 6 endless rotaries feel good, but I don't really plan to use them, so I can't elaborate much there. You can get a nice amount of dynamics in the sensitivity. The pads themselves feel good and are much more responsive than the LPD8. The unit is solid looking and feeling, doesn't move around on a table top when you play due to good quality rubberized feet. Buy Akai Professional MPD226 USB Controller featuring 16 x Thick Fat RGB-Backlit MPC Pads, 4 x Assignable Faders, 4 x Assignable Q-Link Knobs, 4 x Assignable Q-Link Buttons, 36 x Assignable Controls via Three Banks, Classic MPC Note Repeat, MPC Swing, MIDI In & Out Jacks, Dedicated Transport controls, Software Package Included. I also wanted more pads for variety in my 'finger drum' playing. Which has served me well for the most part, but is limited and has now started to mis-trigger on one pad.
